Throwback Discovery: BABY V.O.X

Not gonna lie, Kpop has been disappointing this year. There wasn’t much stand out releases and most songs just sound the same with instrumental beat drops that has been overused ever since 2017. That’s why I spent more time these days listening to music from the past years. Though I don’t remember why, I stumbled upon BABY V.O.X’s music.

Though I have been a Kpop stan for a long time now (a decade already…), I had never listen to much of Baby V.o.x music, despite being fairly familiar with music of their peers like S.E.S and Fin.K.L. But now I have to say, out of the trio of these OG girlgroups, Baby V.O.X has the best music!

Throwback Discovery: Don’t Touch My Girl – Boyfriend

Boyfriend, debuted 2011, releases their 2nd single “Don’t touch my girl” on October 6th, 2011

One of my favorite videos to watch these days are the stage compilation videos made by MBC which they compiled all the stages of an artist into one video. Sometimes they would make special videos that aren’t just exclusive to one artist per video but the stages are compiled based on a specific theme. And thanks to this clip below, I managed to rediscover a hidden gem.

The video is a compilation of catchy songs from Kpop 2nd gen (the golden gen btw). I had one hell of a time bopping to all these past hits that were so familiar with me. Through my years of being a Kpop stan, I am what they would call a “girlgroup stan”, so I am not that too familiar with boygroup songs. I know the really popular ones, and I have a few favorite songs by male artists as well.

But from watching the compilation video, I was shocked to rediscovered a boygroup song that I had completely forgotten and it is a COMPLETE BOP!

So yup the song that I recently rediscovered is Boyfriend’s Don’t touch my girl. I actually knew and even liked this song already when it first came out 8 years ago (wtf 2011 was 8 years ago!?) but as time went by I completely forgot about its existence.

To share a fact about me, my absolute favorite type of songs are the ones which have clear, pretty melody with a melancholy feeling that just keep building up until the final chorus where every emotions just burst out that makes the whole song feel like a short movie. Since I suck at explaining, some examples of these types of songs are SNSD’s ITNW, GFriend’s Rough, WJSN’s Secret, Astro’s Confession, Seventeen’s Pretty U, April’s April Story, Loona 1/3’s Love&Live… From the examples, you can see most of them are girl groups, so it’s pretty obvious that I prefer girl groups because they deliver music that fits my preference more.

But in this case of the mentioned Boyfriend’ song, the song fit completely with my ideal of a perfect song. The melody is beautiful, catchy and the chorus just totally won me over, way better than all those terrible instrumental ‘drop’ songs these days. Not to sound rude, but most boy group songs never give me much emotions listening to them, mostly due to most of them having a ‘cool swag’ concept (a concept I literally despise). And when boygroups step out of those concept, they deliver excellence.

I don’t study music or know any of those music terms so I don’t know what to say besides the fact that the song is just so good. It reminds me a lot of Girl’s Day – Don’t Forget Me, which is another masterpiece btw. Another weird comparison I would make is that it sounds like something GFriend would release if they were a boygroup. Funny how both groups have parallel group names.

So yeah that’s it bye, give Boyfriend a stream so they have money to sue Starship for screwing them over or sumn like that bye.
