Song Recommendation: Goodbye (시간의 숲) – THE BOYZ

As you might or might now know, The Boyz is my current ult boygroup. Which means I’m gonna shove them down your throat until you stan them. I honestly feel like they have great music but a lot of people haven’t give them much chance. I do admit that they have some less-than-impressive title tracks (looking at you Bloom Bloom…), but their albums never disappoint me and always deliver solid b-sides.

Their most recent comeback, Reveal, is no exception. As their first full album, there are lots of great tracks to choose from. Reveal is an excellent title track, and my favorite comeback of theirs since No Air. Other stand out tracks include Ego, Salty, Break Your Rules, Spring Snow,… but my favorite is the one that I’m gonna recommend today: Goodbye.

The album started with a really dark and edgy tone, but by the few final songs, it started to get real slow and soft. As the second to last track, Goodbye was an emotional, but not too angsty ballad. This song is performed by the vocal unit only, consisting of New, Sangyeon, Kevin, Jacob, Hyunjae, and Younghoon. I wish this special song had been performed by the whole group, but this is a song that needs to be carried by strong vocals and harmonization so it’s probably the best choice for this to be a vocal unit song.

The song started off with this beautiful violin sound that reminds me a lot of Let Me In by Haseul (LOONA). Like literally every time I hear the intro of this song, the scenery from Let Me In MV just keep popping up in my head. Then, Kevin started the song beautifully with his smooth vocals, followed by Hyunjae’s warm voice. This song wouldn’t have been as nearly as magical if it wasn’t for the members doing such an amazing job on the vocals. Chanhee was just amazing in here and was the one with the most emotions in his voice. When the song reaches the bridge, I honestly felt like choking up because of the heavenly harmonization and how emotional their voices are.

One thing that strikes me the first time listening to this track was the fact that it sounds like it totally could be a Taeyeon’s song. It sounds like it would fit right in with the ballad tracks in My Voice or Purpose. One particular Taeyeon track that Goodbye reminds me of was Farewell, the last track of the I mini-album. And surprisingly, there was a good reason behind it because both songs are composed by Lee Joohyung of Monotree. Not only that, Goodbye is also co-produced by Matthew Tishler, who also produced Taeyeon’ s U R. I think it’s amazing that The Boyz could work with Taeyeon’s producers and managed to make it work since how hard it is to pull of a Taeyeon song. It’s a proof of The Boyz’s amazing vocal abilities.

One more thing that I would like to add about the song is the lyrics. Like the title suggest, it’s a song about parting and saying goodbye. And so obviously, I have to think about Hwall. He was my 2nd bias so obviously I was incredibly sad about him leaving and honestly, I was worried whether I still feel the same about The Boyz. Luckily, their group dynamic hasn’t changed much and their music still hits the spot for me, but I can’t stop thinking about how much I miss Hwall. The worst thing about this whole situation is how much he loves the stage, he’s literally the member with the most passion on stage and it kills me that his injury is preventing him from doing what he love. And he also went through so much unfortunate events last year, why are things so cruel for him… At least he’s on Instagram now so I still can be updated about him. Really hope he will find what he truly needs because he’s just the best boy and deserves all the love and happiness in the world.
