Is GFriend’s comeback a “Big Hit”?

See what I did there with the title lol? Get it?

Literally the only reason I’m writing this post is to make that pun

GFriend’s comeback with 回:Labyrinth already passed by 2 months ago but I was too busy to write a review about it. But at last, here I am now. I won’t be going on details about each track of the albums but I’m just gonna state my overall feelings about the comeback.

Anyway this comeback is their first album since Source Music was acquired by the company Big Hit in 2019 so obviously there was a lot of hype and anticipation. I was also really excited because Big Hit is loaded with money which means GFriend gonna a huge boost of budget. Plus, this also means there might be a shift in GFriend’s musical direction. And at the end, this comeback ended up to be a classic GFriend sound, but with slight hints of a major change is coming.

SOTY btw

Crossroads is the title track this time and I could not ask for anything better. I fell in love with the song just from the 2nd listen and is still on repeat after 2 months. Yeah I admit it’s literally Time For The Moon Night 2.0 but who gives a f*ck? The song is still damn good and that’s all that matters. Crossroads is not only TFTMN 2.0, it also has a vibe from Rough, with the amazing guitar solo in the outro. This song is basically 2018 GFriend meets 2016 GFriend, which perfectly ties in to the “return” concept of this comeback.

Honestly people can say stuff like GFriend being repetitive but if you look at the industry right now, them being repetitive with their concept is what make them stand out. Literally every girl groups and their mothers are doing girl-crush concept nowadays and it’s just getting tiring. Even though I wish GFriend could have done a brighter, more fun concept, they brought back the emotions and sentimentality that I love so much about classic Kpop. I mean I also love bopping to meaningless fun lyrics, but nothing compares to the feeling of sadness, touching, and hopefulness of GFriend’ songs. To summarize, Crossroads SOTY.

I would talk about Labyrinth too but I’m just lazy. Listen and judge it yourself.

Basically, this is the song that Big Hit team took part in composing so it’s definitely different from their usual style. I really do hope they take a risk and put their trust in Big Hit then go for something like this next comeback.

Anyway, that’s it for now bye.

Umji so gorgeous omg
